Our patient Ivica is a 57- year-old man, coming from Croatia, who had been diagnosed as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) at his local hospital. Since July 2013, he noticed the difficulty in carrying out work with fingers of both hands such as unbuttoning/ buttoning a shirt, writing, etc. The muscle in the hypothenar and thenar started to atrophy as well as the muscle in the lower limbs. Before he came to ReLife International Medical Center, his medical condition was terrible; he was unable to walk independently; He has difficulties with breathing and eating. Long-term illnesses has brought him depression, quite nerve feeble and sleep disorder. Finally, companied by his family members, he came to the ReLife International Medical Center to receive stem cell and traditional Chinese medicine therapy.


Medical Condition before Stem Cell Transplantation

Before the treatment, Ivica’s condition was terrible, both legs were weakness, the muscle in one of legs started to atrophy. He was unable to walk independently and needed a walking stick to help, he had a difficulty in specking and can not pronounce clearly, swallowed solid foot difficulty. The muscle weakness appeared in shoulders, the proximal upper limbs were hard to lift. After taking the medicine for increasing muscular strength (the detail is unknown), receiving the intramuscular injection of Vitamin B12, as well as related rehabilitation training, the patient’s condition has improved. However, duo to not adhere to the relevant treatment and rehabilitation, the patient’s condition became worse and worse.


Stem Cell Transplantation & TCM for Twenty-One Days

After admission, several medical protocols were applied, including: MSC (Mesenchymal Stem Cell) Therapy, combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine(acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese massage, Chinese herbal soup) and Supportive Treatment.


Medical Condition after Stem Cell Transplantation

The patient was alert, normal spirit, no asthma symptom; the ability of speaking has improved; more power appeared in whole body. The balance of bilateral lower limbs got better with the improvement of muscular strength on both legs. Walking is more stable and the shoulder joint is more flexible than before. Physical Examination: general status, BP: 125 / 80mmHg, the patient was conscious. Normal spinal physiological curvature is showed. Muscles atrophy on bilateral hands and upper limbs, especially on palmar interosseus muscle and thenar and hypothenar muscles. Mild limited joint activity appears in shoulders. The neck muscle strength gradeⅤ. Both upper limb muscle strength and grip strength grade IV+, both lower limbs muscle strength grade IV+, normal muscular tension. Reflexes presented on both upper limb tendons, with degradation. Reflexes presented on knee and tendon. Right Babinski: positive. Bilateral Hoffman: negative, right palm jaw reflex: positive.
