What Should We Pay Attention to during Menstruation?

Menstruation, also known as menstrual cycle, is a phenomenon of periodic uterine or vaginal bleeding. For women, menstrual cycle period needs special attention as carelessness may lead to menstrual disorders. Irregular menstruation is the first indication of serious diseases, such as:

  1. Infertility
  2. Gynecologic tumor
  3. Blood disorders
  4. Dysfunctional endocrine system
  5. Gynecological inflammation
  6. Anemia, dizziness, headache, insomnia and even shock
  7. Heart disease, etc.

What should we pay attention to during the menstruation period? Professor Zhao, the Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine in ReLife International Medical Center and the Chief Visiting Professor in Johor Bahru Medical College, Malaysia, have shared some of the tips below:

1. Psychological Care: Maintain a stable and happy mood status; avoid mental swing during menstrual period. Some women may experience backache, breast tenderness, mild diarrhea, fatigue, drowsiness, emotional instability, irritability, depression and etc. However, these phenomena are normal.

2. Healthy Diet: Drink plenty of water to keep your bowels open. Do not eat raw, sour or spicy food. Nutritious foods are highly recommended for women with relatively poor health condition such as insufficient Qi and Blood during menstruation, such as milk, eggs, soybean milk, animal liver, spinach, pork, chicken and lamb. Fresh fruits and vegetables are highly recommended as well, except for garlic, chives and ginger.

3. Keep Your Body Warm: Low body temperature during menstruation can lead to vasoconstriction of the uterus and pelvic blood vessels as well as menstrual disorders, such as menstrual blood reducing and dysmenorrhea. So it’s important for women to keep warm and avoid getting cold during menstruation.

4. Avoid Infection: Keep external genitalia clean; sex is definitely forbidden during menstrual period; no swimming or excessive physical activity. Choose soft, cotton-made undergarment with good ventilation. It’s better to wash and change undergarment frequently and then dry them under the sun so as to reduce the risk of menstrual disorders effectively.
